The First Wristwatch
In 1904 the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont told his friend Louis Cartier that reaching for a pocket watch mid-flight was impossible. Cartier's answer — a flat square case held to the wrist by a leather strap — is widely regarded as the first purpose-built men's wristwatch.
The Santos 100 was released in 2004 to mark the centenary of that idea. It keeps the original geometry and enlarges it: the squared case, the exposed screws on the bezel, the Roman numerals that Cartier has used for over a century.
Screws as Design
The eight screws set into the bezel are the model's signature. They began as an engineering necessity in an era when a wristwatch had to survive an open cockpit, and Cartier chose never to hide them.
The case is finished in polished and brushed stainless steel, with the octagonal crown set with a faceted blue cabochon — the small flash of colour that identifies a Cartier across a room.
White Dial, Roman Numerals
The white dial carries the black Roman numerals that have marked Cartier watches since the beginning, with blued sword-shaped hands sweeping over a railway minute track. Legibility was the founding requirement, and it remains uncompromised.
Hidden within one of the numerals is Cartier's secret signature — a discreet authentication mark that rewards those who know to look for it. Sapphire crystal protects the dial from scratching.
On the Wrist
The integrated steel bracelet flows from the case without interruption, matching its brushed and polished finishing so the watch reads as a single object rather than a case with a strap attached.
